Program Title
WZAW 4th Grade Coloring/Billboard Contest
Program Description
National Work Zone Awareness Week (WZAW) is held every April across the country reminding motorists to drive safely not only for the sake of South Dakota highway workers but also for the drivers themselves and their passengers. WZAW is used as an opportunity to raise public awareness about the dangers for highway construction workers and motorists when road improvements are under way. The Associated General Contractors of South Dakota (AGC) participates each spring by hosting a 4th grade billboard campaign and press conferences held at winning South Dakota elementary schools. The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) is part of the campaign and participates in the press conferences. Participating member companies are given several student submitted drawings, and they chose the artwork to be displayed on a billboard in their respective jobs site(s). There were nine (9) students chosen to be featured during the 2018 campaign. Their artwork is proudly displayed as one of the months in this calendar. Each chosen student was given $25.00 and a $100.00 classroom party! The AGC and the SDDOT want to get the message out to the public, that nearly 85 percent of those killed in work zones are drivers and their passengers. The goal of WZAW is to remind drivers that safe driving means safe work zones for everyone!
